Designing your own crochet patterns… It always seems like something abstract. Where do you even start? How do you make the yarn take the shape you have in mind?
It’s fascinating how much of an engineering job it is to design a crochet pattern. I am an engineer myself, and what I see here is math and logic, mixed with creativity.
Yet, there is no blueprint, no definitive guide on how to do it. One or two books, a Reddit thread, a couple of YouTube videos… People share their experiences and abstract plans. Overall, it boils down to: try a bunch of things, frog over and over, until it looks the way you want. With time, you get the hang of it.
As an engineer looking at an engineering task, I am not satisfied. I have designed a couple of small patterns, mainly using the approach described above. But I’m convinced it’s a learnable and shareable skill. I will go through the most valuable information I can find and collect my findings here. As I learn, you are welcome to learn with me.
